Cheerios conjure thoughts of breakfast, children, feeding, spills, development and caregiving. Part of an ongoing body of work focusing on gestures of care, I have made individual cheerios out of paper clay by hand. Much like the invisible labor of families, this task is tedious, time-consuming and painstaking. The act of breastfeeding also consumes countless hours and energy in all its forms: actively nursing, pumping, cleaning bottles, etc. Cheerios and milk speaks to care, nourishment and the mental, physical and emotional labor necessary to feed one’s family.
